In safe hands

There are few stories I’ve encountered while travelling that have touched me as much as this man’s. His son, our guide, had introduced him to us as one of the village elders. Nestled in the mountains of the rainforest in Borneo, close to the base of Mount Kinabalu, this village had relied on him and his wife for his wise advice and her caring nature.
His wife had helped many a woman in the village go through pregnancy and childbirth and had acted as a midwife for the entire community. Her son went on to tell us how she had prevented the deaths of most of the children and their mothers in the village, but devastatingly was unable to prevent her own as she had died a few months before this photo was taken. The village was left with no one with the skills to take on her important role.
As his son told the story, we listened intently with tears in our eyes looking at the man who was staring back at us so warmly. He must have been used to this story and people’s reactions. We were told of the uncertainty the village faced, not knowing whether their pregnant women would survive without the care their beloved mother and wife had given. However, with the hospitality and friendliness we received, his good nature and wisdom clearly remained. He might not have thought so, but we had a feeling the village would be in safe hands.
