What a disashter!
Posted on Apr 22, 2010 under Blog update | 71 CommentsIn the travel journalism world, if there isn’t a word for something, we make it up. And if a suitable word exists, we ignore it and create another one, or conjoin two words, so there’s a new buzzword for that area.
The word ’staycation’ seems to be rather popular at the moment as Brits are said to be put off by the ash debacle (Ashacle? Crisash? Disashter?) and are opting to stay within the UK for their holidays. There’s also been the ‘naycation’ (which has nothing to do with horses) during the recession/credit crunch when people have decided not to go on holiday at all. Once the conjoined word of its time, ‘interrailing’ is now clearly too old fashioned for today’s trendy down-with-da-kids travellers, and we’ve moved onto the ‘traincation‘.
Being an advocate of volunteer tourism, I tend to use ‘voluntourism‘, but only because I know I’m meant to in such a highly competitive industry that demands a knowledge of the new ‘in’ words. It only saves my eager fingers from tapping out four measly letters and who can be in that much of a rush?
I do like, and am a self-confessed, ‘bragabond’ (someone who boasts about their travel adventures) and I love ‘couchsurfing‘ which conjures up fantastic images of a new flying sofa form of travelling, but is simply a great way to see places and meet new people when on a budget.
Something I have little experience of, but would like to, is ‘flashpacking’. I think most backpackers have met a flashpacker who has top of the range equipment and can afford to dip into five-star hotels when the going gets tough, leaving you in your bed bug-infested smelly hostel. A flashpacker will always look effortlessly good in their branded clothes and smell of lovely Molton Brown travel goodies, and as annoying as that is, make friends with one and they might treat you to a champagne cocktail in a fancy bar at some point.
This is a weird one though. In my (very) brief research on travel terms, I stumbled upon ‘thanatourism’ which apparently is taken from the Greek word for death. So this sort of tourism involves visiting places associated with, not just death, but violent death. Crumbs. Whatever next? Ashtourism?
